Can Yayınları and Amazon Türkiye have joined forces to present “Engel Tanımayan Kitaplar” (Books Without Barriers), a series specially printed in Braille. The 24-book collection is made up of world classics and much-loved children’s books, printed in Braille with Can Yayınları’s expertise. The books are on sale throughout Türkiye via Amazon Türkiye. The “Engel Tanımayan Kitaplar” series went on sale on Amazon.com.tr on 15 October, White Cane Safety Day.
This special collection includes stories by major authors of world literature, while the children’s section features the Elmer series, which has reached more than 10 million readers in around 40 languages.
According to the World Health Organization, 285 million people worldwide live with visual impairment, 39 million of whom are completely blind. Yet because communication and information are so heavily visual, visually impaired people cannot make full use of these resources.
Speaking about this meaningful collaboration, Can Yayınları General Manager Ali Granit said: “At Can Yayınları, we feel a responsibility to bring the best books of Turkish and world literature to every part of society. Although we have taken important steps in recent years with audiobook apps for visually impaired people, sadly there are almost no literary works printed in Braille in Türkiye. With this in mind, we have teamed up once again with Amazon Türkiye – with whom we have worked on various important projects since its very first day in Türkiye – this time for visually impaired readers. We put together a lovely selection of world and children’s classics and had 24 of our books produced in Braille. We printed them in the format easiest for visually impaired people to read and, thanks to amazon.com.tr, made them accessible from anywhere in Türkiye. Over time, we plan to expand our range of titles as well.”
The series is set to be expanded in the future. The current list of books is as follows:
