From 5 March, the Bozlu Art Project Mongeri Building hosts “Ardıç Kuşu” (The Fieldfare), a solo exhibition by Can Göknil. The exhibition’s central themes – the notions of “cycle” and “balance” in both art and nature – reveal the many sides of Göknil, who has passed her 50th year in the art world, while the exhibition’s creative inspiration flits through it from end to end, just like a fieldfare.
“Ardıç Kuşu” is the source of inspiration for the recent work of Can Göknil, one of the leading names in Turkish art since the 1970s. In this section, alongside the canvases, the artist’s three-dimensional works combine with manis (traditional folk quatrains) to reveal the humour and satire that so often appear in her work. Another section of the exhibition, “Sevda Habercileri” (Messengers of Love), unfolds through manis, one of the most important elements of the oral tradition, with roots stretching back to the tales of “Dede Korkut”. The section “Kader Habercileri” (Messengers of Fate), comprising the first works Can Göknil made in her studio in Etiler, focuses on fortune-tellers – the first practitioners of the business of bringing news from the future.
Can Göknil’s exhibition “Ardıç Kuşu” can be seen until 20 April.
