AI Is Transforming the Tasks Within Work, Not the Workforce Itself
Artificial intelligence is driving a profound transformation in business, yet at its core lies not the wholesale disappearance of professions but the redistribution of the tasks within them. Writing, reading, summarising, reporting, analysis, customer communication, design, basic coding and documentation are among the many tasks now being reallocated between humans and AI. Zeynep Mete, founder of Neotalent and a people and culture strategy specialist, pointed out that AI has become a general-purpose technology that now affects almost every profession.

Neotalent founder and people and culture strategy specialist Zeynep Mete said three key outcomes are emerging in the structure of the workforce as of 2026. “The first is productivity gains and the redesign of work driven by generative AI. Companies are focusing not on doing more with fewer employees, but on producing more output with the same employees, and are debating how that productivity can be turned into revenue. The second is the rapid change in skill sets. According to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) 2025 report, 170 million new roles will emerge by 2030 while 92 million will be displaced, showing just how fundamentally ways of working are evolving. The third is a contraction in entry-level roles, particularly in areas open to automation. In some countries, research points to falling rates of job offers for young people in positions with high exposure to AI,” she said.
AI Is Not Ending Professions, It Is Reshaping Them
As AI use becomes ever more widespread, some professions will undergo transformation. Mete explained that AI will not eliminate professions, but that role definitions in some occupational groups will change and the scope of certain positions will narrow. She continued: “Office assistants, secretaries, executive assistants, data entry clerks, operations staff, call centre and customer service representatives, accounting and purchasing support staff, junior copywriters and content production assistants, graphic design support roles, junior test engineers and software support staff, and cashiers and counter clerks are among the occupational groups being redefined by AI-driven automation. The human focus is increasingly shifting towards strategy, oversight and decision-making.
