The Peninsula New York Presents New York Urban Contexts | 1980–2025, a Contemporary Art Showcase

A new exhibition bringing together works by New York artists sits at the heart of an inspiring programme of art events running throughout the season.

The Peninsula New York proudly presents New York Urban Contexts | 1980–2025, a contemporary art showcase that focuses on the city’s creative energy. Bringing together a total of 11 works by four New York artists, the exhibition gives the city’s dynamic art scene visibility through a powerful narrative. In dialogue with the hotel’s iconic Keith Haring installations, the selection explores an artistic evolution that stretches from the experimental movements of downtown to early media innovations, and from street aesthetics to today’s boundary-pushing techniques.

On view in the hotel lobby until May 2026, the exhibition brings together works that highlight continuity and transformation across generations, positioning New York as a vibrant centre of cultural exchange, rediscovery and creation.

Featured Artists

New York Urban Contexts | 1980–2025 brings together artists who approach the city’s ever-changing fabric from different perspectives. Their work makes visible the dialogues, transformations and encounters that have shaped the New York art scene over the past four decades.

· Dan Asher is represented by six untitled works from the 1980s and 1990s. Made in graphite, oil and tempera, his mask-like portraits explore the intersections of personal, psychological and public space.

• JPW3, in Luv (2018), made with oil pastel, acrylic, spray paint and wax, transforms everyday objects into dense, sculptural compositions, interpreting the visual traces of metropolitan life through repetition and appropriation.

• Kosuke Kawahara, in three works made between 2023 and 2025, combines oil paint, urethane, spray paint and stitched found fabrics to create layered, site-responsive pieces that examine growth, decay, perception and human behaviour through shifting urban conditions.

• Servane Mary, in her acrylic-on-canvas work New York City Trip (2025), brings historical imagery together with abstraction to question identity, representation and the emotional impact of images in contemporary culture.

Art Programmes

To coincide with the launch of the exhibition, the hotel is offering special programmes designed to bring guests and the local community together around art. Through the Peninsula Academy, guests have the chance to meet the four artists, join a curator-led tour of the exhibition and visit Martos Art Gallery, gaining unique insight into how the works were made.

Through collaborations with students of The Art Students League of New York, curator-moderated talks and artist studio visits are being organised with the aim of supporting local and emerging talent.

In May, an intimate panel and cocktail gathering with the curator and artists will be held in the Gotham Lounge for guests and art lovers who wish to connect more closely with the works in the exhibition.

“New York Urban Contexts reflects the energy and transformation that the city’s art scene has carried across generations,” says Samir Ibrahim, Managing Director, The Peninsula New York. “Art is at the heart of the cultural experience we offer at The Peninsula, and this exhibition invites guests and New Yorkers alike to engage actively with a distinctive part of the city’s character.”

Continuing The Peninsula Hotels’ long-standing relationship with the arts, the exhibition will be followed by a new edition of the global Art in Resonance programme, which returns to Hong Kong in the spring.
