Salt, founded by Garanti BBVA, has opened the Öktem and Barutçuoğlu Archive to the public; it can be accessed at archives.saltresearch.org. Incorporated into the Salt Research Education Archive, the collection brings together photographs relating to the professional work of Lâtif Öktem (1894-1985), who served as a teacher, inspector and director of education at the Ministry of Education (Maarif Vekâleti), and photographs relating to the work of his sister Bahriye Öktem, headmistress of Moda Primary School.
The collection includes photographs of the schools Lâtif Öktem inspected in the 1920s in Diyarbakır, Mardin, Balıkesir, Istanbul, Kırklareli and Çanakkale; excursions with headteachers, teachers and pupils; Republic Day celebrations; and family members who migrated from Crimea to Romania and then on to Istanbul. There are also photographs of Bahriye Öktem with teachers and pupils at Moda Primary School. In addition, an album compiled by Haluk Barutçuoğlu, husband of Tınçay Öktem, daughter of Lâtif and Kadriye Öktem, features the ceremonies celebrating Hatay’s accession to Türkiye, as well as schools, pupils and scouts at official ceremonies in and around Antakya in the 1930s.
Photographs taken by “Foto Yıldız, M. Danyal” in Diyarbakır, “Zeki Fotoğraf Stüdyosu” in Kadıköy, “Mazhâr Reşit” and “Foto Bahar” in Kırklareli, “Foto Seraydaryan” and “Foto Hikmet” in Antakya, and “Resne Fotoğraf Stüdyosu, Rahmizâde Bahaeddin” in Istanbul also shed light on the history of the era’s local photography studios.
