The Loneliness of Modern Man: Albert Camus – The Stranger (1942)

The Loneliness of Modern Man: Albert Camus – The Stranger (1942)

Albert Camus’s novel The Stranger is one of the most important works of modern literature. It tells the story of Meursault, a man estranged from the world, from the passage of time and, above all, from himself. Meursault’s character invites us to reflect on the loneliness, alienation and meaninglessness of modern life.

The novel’s opening line, “Mother died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don’t know,” has left every reader alone with a deep wound and a host of questions.

Meursault is a civil servant living in Algeria. When he receives news of his mother’s death, it is an ordinary event to him. Yet this lack of reaction and indifference only widens the gap between him and society. Meursault is a character who struggles to conform to society’s norms and feels alienated from it. He therefore questions the meaninglessness of life and comes to believe that life has no purpose.

Because Meursault feels alienation and loneliness so deeply, any reader can easily identify with him. The novel explores humanity’s existential questioning and the search for the meaning of life. In trying to understand Meursault’s indifference to his mother’s death, readers may find themselves asking similar questions about their own lives.

The novel’s author, Albert Camus, has a profound understanding of the existential problems of human beings. By addressing such fundamental issues as loneliness, meaninglessness and alienation, Camus allows readers to question life more deeply.

In short, Albert Camus’s The Stranger is one of the most important works of modern literature. Through Meursault, the novel explores existential questioning while giving readers the opportunity to question their own lives. By delving deeply into fundamental human problems such as loneliness, meaninglessness and alienation, it helps readers understand life more profoundly. It invites them to set out on a journey in search of the meaning of life and the mystery of existence.

Happy reading, my dear fellow book lovers.
