KALPAZANLAR (THE COUNTERFEITERS)
Kalpazanlar’ın Günlüğü (Journal of The Counterfeiters)
Published in 1925, The Counterfeiters holds a special place and significance both within André Gide’s body of work and in world literature.
Bernard, who is preparing for his school-leaving exams, discovers a family secret, leaves home and sets out with his schoolfriend Olivier on an adventure to build a new philosophy of life – an adventure that takes a mysterious turn with the appearance of Olivier’s uncle Édouard, who is writing a novel called The Counterfeiters.
Seen as a herald of the Nouveau Roman, The Counterfeiters is also considered one of the first works in which Gide, moving away from the conventions of the classical novel, used the “mise en abyme” or “story-within-a-story” technique in the modern sense.
Included at the end of the book and published in Turkish for the first time, Journal of The Counterfeiters is a fascinating source on Gide’s theory of the novel: reading what a writer thought and what passed through his mind as he planned his novel is as thrilling and provocative as witnessing a natural phenomenon.
“… The Counterfeiters brings many innovations to the novel form; with its multiplicity of viewpoints and shifting structure, it still seems brand new to us today.” Tahsin Yücel
